BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior guard Rachel Butler scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but it was just not enough as the Hampton University Lady Pirates fell to the Lady Eagles of Coppin State University, 63-60, Saturday at the Coppin Center here in Baltimore.
“We never gave up playing throughout the entire game and I thought that the ladies played a great game. We gave them hell for 40 minutes,” said HU head coach Walter Mebane. “Defensively, I know that it was going to be hard to hold both of their leading scorers to season lows, but we did a great job holding Rashida Suber to only two points in the second half.”
In the first half, the Lady Pirates shot 38 percent (12-of-31) from the floor while the Lady Eagles of Coppin State shot 45 percent (16-of-35) as the Lady Eagles clinged to a narrow 35-30 lead at halftime.
In the second half, with 10:19 reminding in the game, freshman guard Mikki Clayton hit a pull-up jumper to tie the game up for the first time on the day at 47 all. The Lady Pirates saw their first led of the game when Ashlee Finley hit one-of-two free throws with 8:40 reminding in the game. The two teams went back and forth until the 1:07 mark, when Whitney Cunningham made a layup and a free-throw to give the Lady Eagles the lead for good at 61-60. From there, Coppin State would go on to win by a final score of 63-60.
The Lady Pirates shot 36 percent (22-of-60) from the field on the night while the Lady Eagles of Coppin State shot 39 percent (29-of-73) from the floor to lift them to a 63-60 victory over Hampton.
“Overall, I thought that the ladies did an outstanding job and they did everything that we wanted to do, but in the end, Coppin State came out on top,” stated Mebane.
The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Monday, February 25 as they play their final road game of the season against the Lady Bears of Morgan State University. In their first meeting, the Lady Pirates defeated Morgan State 67-61 at the HU Convocation Center back on January 28. Tip-off for the game is slated for 6:00 p.m.
